ASTRONAUTS

Very fine Photograph issued by NASA of the seven Project Mercury astronauts standing before an F-106 jet, each wearing his flight suit and holding his helmet. Signed by six of the astronauts above their corresponding images: Scott Carpenter, Alan Shepard, Donald Slayton, Gordon Cooper (twice), John Glenn and Walter Schirra. Virgil Grissom is the seventh astronaut, whose signature does not appear on this photograph. The color photograph was taken on January 20, 1961 during a training program at the NASA Langley Research Center, and measures 10 inches wide by 8 inches high.

The first Americans selected to travel in space, the Mercury 7 consisted of Scott Carpenter, L. Gordon Cooper, Jr., John H. Glenn, Jr., Virgil I. Grissom, Walter M. Schirra, Jr., Alan B. Shepard, Jr., and Donald K. Slayton. Proving that human spaceflight was possible, these missions paved the way for the Gemini and Apollo programs as well as for all further human spaceflight.

Framed in white, red and antiqued gilt measuring 15 inches wide by 13 1/2 inches high.
