FLORIDA - H. O’REILLY

[FLORIDA]. Henry O’Reilly. American author; prominent in early Rochester affairs, including the “Anti-Masonic Excitement.” Autograph Letter Signed, one and a quarter pages, legal folio, [Rochester, New York], August 5, 1836. To Moses King in Attica, New York. Fine condition.

“...the plan adopted for our settlement in East Florida, is to have a common stock made of the Rollstown Tract which Dr. Edward & I secured...[and to divide it into six tracts, but]...I am of opinion that it is not best to have more than six joint proprietors as too many joint owners might rather clog than help arrangements. If six or eight associate in agreeing to make a settlement proper, they can then sell to others after their plans are more particularly developed. ...an opportunity is now presented if you wish to unite with us. I believe I have already told you some of the reasons which led us to secure Rollstown, & also my opinion as to its location for a town, being well situated on the noble St. Johns, near the confluence of the chief waters of E. Florida. The terms are, at the rate of $8 per acre, Rollstown having the advantage of lying handsomely along the banks, & having about three times the common frontage on the River, besides being one of the best known tracts in East Florida — having been settled by Lord Rolles while England held Florida from 1763 to ’83. We should like to know your determination as soon as convenient, as we are now preparing matters for settlement....”
