Horatio Nelson's autographs and signatures are memorabilia eagerly sought by those who see the British Naval Captain as representative of an age of heroic figures. Nelson's autographs, signatures and signed letters are distinguished by the year 1797 when his right arm was lost in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Nelson's position required him to immediately resume signing letters and orders. Horatio Nelson's importance as a great naval hero in England cannot be overstated. England was very threatened by Napoleon, who made no secret of his plans to invade and occupy England, as he was already doing to other countries in Europe. All that protected England from France was the Royal Navy. Horatio Nelson began a crucial pursuit of the French Fleet across the Atlantic, through the Caribbean and back to the Mediterranean, finally locating the Fleet off Trafalgar. Nelson's greatest feat was in conceiving a revolutionary naval strategy of not attacking an enemy fleet parallel, but sailing through their lines and firing into the bow and stern of the enemy's ships. This new tactic won the Battle of Trafalgar, destroyed the French Navy and Napoleon's plans for invading England. It also resulted in the death of Nelson who was enshrined as the hero who saved England.

Horatio Nelson's autograph and signature are not encountered separately from signed letters and signed documents very often. Except for naval correspondence, few signed letters from Nelson are found. Because of their official naval nature, 19th century collectors didn't remove signatures as was the custom.
